Save Fuel & Increase Battery Life with Brand New VY V6 Alternator
A battery, a voltage regulator, and an alternator are the three primary components of an automotive charging system to kick start it and to use power for various components. In conjunction with the battery, the alternator generates electricity for a vehicle’s electrical components, such as the interior and exterior lighting and the instrument panel. The term alternator is derived from the term alternating current (AC). The VY V6 alternator by Parts Factory Australia is best fitted for Holden commodore cars, while we do have alternators that are compatible with VS, VT, VS and VY variants.
Alternators are usually situated towards the front of the engine and are powered by the crankshaft, which turns the up-and-down action of the pistons into circular movement. Some early models utilised a separate drive belt from the crankshaft pulley to the alternator pulley, but most automobiles now use a serpentine belt or a single belt that drives all components that rely on crankshaft power. Most alternators are attached to the engine through brackets that bolt to a precise location. One bracket is typically permanent, while the other is adjustable to tighten the driving belt.
Alternators generate alternating current (AC) power via electromagnetism, which is produced by the stator-rotor interaction, which we will discuss later in the article. The electricity is sent into the battery, where it provides voltage to power the different electrical systems. Before we go into the mechanics of the alternator and how it creates energy, let’s have a look at the different parts of an alternator in the next section.
Components of an Alternator
Alternators, for the most part, are compact and lightweight. Alternators in most passenger vehicles and light trucks are around the size of a coconut and are built with an aluminium exterior casing since the lightweight metal does not magnetise. This is significant because aluminium dissipates the enormous heat created by creating electrical power and because the rotor assembly generates a magnetic field.
Close inspection of an alternator reveals vents on both the front and back sides. This, once again, assists in heat dissipation. On the front of the alternator, a driving pulley is connected to the rotor shaft. The crankshaft rotates the drive belt when the engine is operating, which spins the rotor shaft pulley. The alternator, in essence, converts mechanical energy from the engine into electrical power for the car’s accessories.
Cooling is critical to the efficiency of an alternator. The external fan blades situated on the rotor shaft behind the pulley may identify an earlier device. Inside the aluminium shell of modern alternators are cooling fans. These fans use the same mechanical power from the rotating rotor shaft to operate.
There are multiple terminals on the rear side of the alternator (or connecting points in an electrical circuit). Let’s have a look at some of them:
- S terminal is tasked to detect battery voltage
- IG terminal ensures the Ignition switch has sufficient voltages during the car start process.
- L terminal performs the duty of disconnecting the circuit from the warning bulb.
- The B terminal is the main alternator output terminal that is linked with a battery of the car
- F terminal ensures full-field bypass for the regulator.
