HZJ105 Steering Pump: Check the Bare Pump and Drive Gear

A replacement steering pump can be correctly identified for an engine and still be an incomplete purchase for the planned repair. The important package question on this HZJ105 example is the drive gear: the listed unit is a bare hydraulic pump supplied without that gear. An exposed shaft in the photograph is an inclusion detail to resolve before the vehicle is apart.

This guide concerns the listed Australian LandCruiser 105 Series HZJ105 with the 4.2L naturally aspirated 1HZ diesel, 04/1998–07/2007, using original reference 44320-60171. It explains how to compare the pump and its supplied contents. It is not a general pump fitment statement for every 100 or 105 Series LandCruiser.

Establish the 1HZ application first

Record the VIN, chassis code, engine code and build month. HZJ105 and HDJ100 are different application records, even though both may appear in searches for a 4.2L diesel LandCruiser. The selected 1HZ pump is not presented as the 1HD-FTE HDJ100 pump or the 2UZ-FE petrol V8 pump.

Use the complete original reference with those vehicle details. A supplier’s broad family heading may mention several LandCruiser generations or engines; that is not permission to extend the narrower application on the HZJ105 1HZ pump listing. Engine conversions and previous changes to the steering system deserve a separate enquiry.

Read the exposed drive end as a package boundary

Actual HZJ105 pump photograph showing the exposed threaded shaft and two-hole mounting flange without a drive gear
Actual supplied-pump photograph. The exposed shaft does not include a drive gear.

The pictured pump has an exposed threaded and keyed shaft, a two-hole mounting flange and defined hydraulic-port positions. Compare these features with the original using corresponding views. Do not count an absent gear as a photographed tooth pattern, and do not infer a gear specification from a distant photograph of another pump.

If the planned repair involves retaining an original drive component, the installer must decide whether that component is correct and reusable, and establish the appropriate transfer procedure. This article does not prescribe a gear swap, a puller, a tightening value or a reuse decision. Those questions should be settled using the vehicle-specific service information before ordering a bare unit.

Separate the included seals from the complete repair requirements

ItemSelected package
Hydraulic pumpOne pump matching the listed reference and application.
O-ring and washerSpecified as included by the manufacturer.
Drive gearNot included.
Reservoir, vehicle hoses and fluidNot included.

An O-ring and washer in the package do not establish that every sealing item or service material for the vehicle is supplied. Ask the workshop to identify the complete repair requirements. Protective coloured port caps in the photograph are packaging details, not an electrical connector or an installation instruction.

Check the mounting and hydraulic arrangement as well

Compare the flange, shaft arrangement, inlet and rear hydraulic connection with the original. Keep the pump oriented the same way in each photograph; rotating one image can make a connection appear to be on a different side. A black cast body alone is not a sufficiently specific match.

If a feature is hidden while the pump remains installed, begin with the vehicle information and readable original markings. The workshop can document the less accessible faces during assessment. Avoid changing hoses or brackets to make an unconfirmed assembly fit.

A short enquiry that makes the decision reviewable

  • VIN, HZJ105 chassis, 1HZ engine and build month.
  • The full original pump reference and any readable labels.
  • Drive-end and mounting-face photographs, where already accessible.
  • Views of both hydraulic connections.
  • Confirmation that the workshop has allowed for the excluded gear, reservoir, hoses and fluid.

A parts match does not diagnose heavy steering, noise or fluid loss. The workshop should establish the fault before choosing the repair scope. Reference checks and next step

The manufacturer’s pump description identifies 44320-60171 and its supplied components. The independent Terrain Tamer application at All Four x 4 corroborates the HZJ105/1HZ reference family. Their broader date ranges are not copied into this narrower product selection.

Check the current HZJ105 product page and resolve any original-reference or mounting disagreement before ordering.
